Ran over cop? It's a murder bid
BANGALORE: If you don’t stop your car and run over a traffic policeman during the drunken driving checks, you might be booked for attempt to murder. The rising number of such incidents has left the senior police officers concerned. A 20-year-old youth, identified as Trijesh Jayachandran, ran over traffic constable M V Girish during such a drive near High Grounds on Saturday and Girish suffered a fracture in the leg.
Sub-inspector B A Veeji Kumar, who was on the spot, said: “We were checking the vehicles near Windsor Manor on Saturday night.

Around 10.40 pm, we saw a car coming from Windsor towards Shivananda Circle and the driver was looking drunk. When I went to get the alcometer, the driver started shouting and immediately drove the vehicle, knocking off Girish, who was near the car. The car ran over Girish’s right leg.’’
The police who later caught Trijesh handed him over to the law and order police. He was booked not only for obstructing the duty of a police officer under IPC Act 332 and drunken driving under Indian Motor Vehicles Act section 185, but also a serious charge of attempt to murder under section 307 of IPC.
The police on Sunday said this is the second incident in 10 days. A similar incident had taken place in Basavanagudi, leaving a constable injured as a car driver ran over him. The offender has been booked for murder bid.
Additional commissioner of police (traffic) Praveen Sood said: “This has been seventh incident in the last one and a half years where traffic policemen have been seriously injured by reckless driving. Usually, there would be allegations and name-dropping, but we are taking a harsh view on this kind of incidents. We will book offenders for attempt to murder if they run over a policeman on duty.’’
